About Relays
An electromechanical relay is an electrically operated switch that uses an electromagnet to mechanically open or close a circuit. It consists of an electromagnet, armature, spring, and contact terminals. When current flows through the coil, it creates a magnetic field that moves the armature, closing or opening the contacts. Relays are classified by their configuration (normally open or closed) and number of contacts. Commonly used in automation, motor control, and telecommunications, they provide isolation and control between different voltage levels. While reliable and capable of handling high currents, electromechanical relays can be slower and may wear out over time compared to solid-state alternatives.
